We teach with clarity, cue with integrity, and always stay curious.

The Original Intention

Today, the word Pilates is everywhere, yet the method itself is often diluted or reshaped far from Joseph Pilates’ original vision. The classical tradition is devoted to preserving the structure, discipline, and intention of his work—originally called Contrology.

Contrology is a sophisticated system of physical education guided by the mind to improve strength, posture, balance, and overall health. Central to the method is the powerhouse—the integrated center of the body that stabilizes the spine and organizes all movement.

What you don’t like, you do twice
— Romana Kryzanowska

Driven by lineage

Our lineage connecting us to Joseph Pilates traces primarily back to Romana Kryzanowska who was endorsed by Clara Pilates to carry on the studio after Joseph’s death. Jay Grimes is another highly respected elder whose perspective reflects another direct thread to Joseph Pilates we highly respect and follow.

Other first-generation teachers—Carola Trier, Kathy Grant, Eve Gentry, Lolita San Miguel, Ron Fletcher among others—went on to develop their own schools and lineages, each preserving a unique facet of Joseph Pilates’ work.

At Body Contrology Lab, we honor these contributions while staying rooted in the Romana Kryzanowska and Jay Grimes lineage. We return consistently to the source—Joseph Pilates’ own published works, original exercise order, archival photographs and film, and the clear intention expressed in his writing: frequent, vigorous, and precise exercise guided by mental discipline and control to achieve true health.

We’re committed to continuing education with 2nd & 3rd generation teachers who remain our compass guiding how we practice, and teach the method today.
